Are You Saved?

“Unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” — John 3:3

Are you saved? It is the most important question you must answer in this life. Not how much money you have, not where you are going next week, not what vacation you have planned, not who you want to marry — but are you saved? Everything else lives inside this present life. This question reaches into eternity.

Only two positions

The Word of God declares that there are only two positions a person can be in. One is saved — knowing the new birth, indwelt by the Holy Spirit who regenerates the heart and gives the peace of God from within. The other is lost. Even those who are saved know that second position well, because they were once there themselves: once under condemnation, once with the wrath of God abiding on them, once controlled by darkness. Two positions, leading to two destinations — the saved to heaven, and the lost to hell. That is why this topic matters so much.

A testimony, not a ritual

I met a man recently while getting a sub, and I spoke to him about eternal life. He was positive about the message, which is good. But when I asked how he came to Christ, he answered, “Oh, I was baptized at two or three years old.” My friend, that is not the answer we are looking for. That is not the answer that accords with the Word of God.

The answer I was hoping to hear was this: I came to the end of myself. I was a sinner on my way to hell, and God met me. I repented. I surrendered my life to Jesus, and I am walking with Him now, and I have a testimony. That is what God wants to give every single believer — the love of God shed abroad in the heart:

Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Romans 5:5 (NKJV)

God is not holding back. Sometimes we imagine He is, but the truth is that people hold back from God. He wants to come like a rushing wind, with power, so that a person knows they are saved.

What Jesus told a religious man

In John 3, Jesus speaks to Nicodemus — a man who knew the Scriptures thoroughly in his intellect, yet was missing it spiritually. We will meet many people like that: they know about God, even about religion, but they are spiritually dead. Our task is to bring them the good news in truth and love, not to condemn them but that they might be saved.

Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

John 3:3 (NKJV)

I love that Jesus says “Most assuredly” — truly, truly — because it signals emphasis. God is underlining the importance of the new birth. It is how your true spiritual eyes are opened. And He presses it further:

Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

John 3:5-6 (NKJV)

You must be born again. It is a must, not a maybe, not a someday. When we hear of people passing from this life, the question that should grip us is: were they born again? All the striving, achieving, and preparing of a lifetime cannot substitute for it.

You can know

The good news is that you do not have to figure it out on your own. The Holy Spirit Himself gives the assurance:

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

Romans 8:16 (NKJV)

God wants to give you a testimony today. If you are not saved, turn from your old ways and come to God with a whole heart, and He will give you the gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ. And if you are saved — praise God — remember that we endure to the end by His grace, walking with Him, not merely marking a moment and then going our own way.

Ask your soul today Are you born again? Not baptized as an infant, not raised in church, not generally religious — but born again, with the Spirit bearing witness in you. If you cannot say yes with assurance, today is the day to come to God with a whole heart.
